The Problem

In Dubuque, 56% of the families living below the poverty line are single parent families led by a mother.

Many mothers, especially those in vulnerable circumstances, experience isolation, judgment, and a lack of community, which undermines their confidence and ability to thrive. Traditional systems often operate without meaningful input from the individuals they serve, leading to solutions that fail to reflect the real needs of mothers and families. Without adequate support (both tangible and relationally), mothers can struggle to maintain the stability needed to preserve and nurture their families, which increases the risk of her children being removed from her care and placed in the foster care system. Research has shown that the effects of this trauma can affect a family for up to 7 generations.

The Solution

Moms Connect is built on the foundation of relational health, recognizing that consistent, supportive connections are key to resilience and well-being.

By fostering trust-based relationships, we ensure that moms can access resources in a way that honors their dignity and empowers them. Through twice-monthly gatherings, a dedicated mentor program, a parent advisory committee, and one-on-one connections, we create multiple opportunities for moms to engage, share, and lead. Unlike traditional top-down approaches, we build a collaborative community where mothers actively shape the support they receive. This model helps moms navigate complex systems while using their experiences to guide programs and uplift others.
